The extension page lets you change selected subscriber’s primary extension number based on a set of rules listed here. You can select one or all the rules to apply if you want depending on what changes you want to make. These rules are applied from the top down so if you select more than one, keep that in mind. If a particular rule you selected doesn’t apply to an extension (i.e. you indicate you want to strip all but the left most 4 digits off and the extension being processed is already only 4 digits long) that rule is simply skipped and the next selected rule is applied. Once the new extension is calculated it’s checked against other extensions in the system to make sure it’s unique. If it’s not, an error is logged and the original extension is left alone.
This can be handy if a site is changing their numbering plan to a different length of digits or the like. It can also be useful if you’ve used a full 10 digit number set (i.e. pulled from the Business Phone field in Exchange during Unity import) and you want to reduce it to the right most or left most 4 digits for instance.
Before proceeding off this page, be sure to test the changes you have laid out by entering a test extension and pressing the “test” button. The resulting value after processing that number through your proposed changes will show up in the “new value” edit box. Once you’re sure you have the changes you want in place, proceed.
NOTE: Unity 3.0 and later allows up to 9 alternate extensions along with the primary extension. The changes applied on this page do NOT touch any of the alternate extensions. Only the primary extension (found on the subscriber’s profile page in the SA) is modified.
